In 2020, Ranyaka, a non-profit urban planning consultancy that encourages active citizenry and collaboration to co-create thriving communities, commissioned me to photograph Boitekong township in Rustenburg. Not only does Ranyaka work extensively with civil society organisations within the area, but they also sponsor a number of entrepreneurs, in collaboration with FNB.

I profiled several citizen activists and entrepreneurs, from fruit sellers, to small restaurant owners, a day-care owner, a tailor, and a man who rents out water filtration systems to other local businesses. Amid the haze of the platinum mines that dominate the area, the township is a bustling hub of potential, with a rich plethora of cultures and languages.
